Health & Safety Policy — Gardening Services Hanwell
Purpose: This Health and Safety policy sets out the commitment of Gardening Services Hanwell and associated Hanwell gardening services teams to provide a safe working environment for staff, contractors and clients. Our objective is to reduce risks for all outdoor maintenance activities including garden maintenance in Hanwell, landscaping, hedge cutting and tree work, and to make sure every task is planned, assessed and executed safely.
Scope: This policy applies to all employees, subcontractors and visitors working with or on behalf of our company. It covers routine lawn care, planting, irrigation maintenance, shrub pruning, safe use of hand and powered tools and operations in domestic and commercial gardens across the local service area. The policy also supports seasonal variations in work patterns and the additional hazards those bring.
Responsibilities
Management is responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and for providing adequate resources for risk control. Supervisors and team leads in our Hanwell gardening services network must ensure that risk assessments are completed and that all staff follow safe systems of work. Employees are required to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others and to report hazards promptly.Risk Assessment and Safe Systems
We conduct documented risk assessments for each new type of work and for tasks that pose particular hazards, such as tree work, pesticide application and work near vehicles or public footpaths. Assessments identify hazards, evaluate risks and set out control measures. Our garden maintenance Hanwell teams use method statements and permit-to-work procedures where necessary to control exposure to identified hazards.
Training and Competence: All staff receive induction training and job-specific instruction, including the safe operation of mowers, chainsaws, strimmers and other powered tools. Training records are maintained and refreshed regularly. Where specialist tasks are required—such as higher-risk arboricultural work—only competent, certificated operatives are assigned.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Appropriate PPE is provided and must be worn as required. This includes hi-visibility clothing, safety boots, eye and ear protection, gloves and respiratory protection when handling dust or chemicals. PPE is regularly inspected and replaced when worn or damaged.
Equipment and Maintenance: All equipment used by the company is subject to regular maintenance and safety checks. Powered plant is inspected before each use and defects are reported and rectified. Safe storage and transport procedures are in place for fuel, batteries and sharp tools to prevent spills, fire risk and accidental injury while delivering gardening services around Hanwell and nearby areas.
Hazardous Substances: Where herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers are used, material safety data and COSHH-like risk information are held for each product and controls are applied to avoid harm to people, pets and the environment. Only trained personnel apply chemicals, and applications are timed and recorded to minimise exposure of the public and other workers.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid: Emergency and first aid arrangements are in place across all worksites. Foremen carry first aid kits and communications devices for rapid contact with emergency services if required. Clear procedures are set for dealing with incidents, fire, major injuries, and environmental incidents such as fuel spills, ensuring prompt action and appropriate reporting.
Accident Reporting and Investigation: All incidents, near misses and occupational illnesses must be reported immediately. These reports are investigated to identify root causes and to implement preventative actions. Findings are shared with staff to help reduce recurrence and to improve the overall safety culture within our gardening services in Hanwell and the wider operational area.
Monitoring and Review: Safety performance is monitored through regular site inspections, toolbox talks and periodic audits. We set measurable objectives and targets to reduce incidents and to improve compliance with safe work practices. This Hanwell gardeners policy is reviewed at least annually and whenever significant changes to operations occur.
Commitment: Gardening Services Hanwell is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. Leadership and staff share responsibility for creating a safe workplace. By following this policy and the associated procedures, we aim to protect people, property and the environment while delivering professional groundskeeping and landscaping services.
